In Nepal with Save the Children

Amanda visited the remote region of Sindhupalchowk with Save the Children and Text Santa in November. Here she met families who had lost their homes and family members in the tragedy and were attempting to rebuild their lives.

The Sindhupalchowk region was less affected than the epicentre in Gorkha, however because of the remote nature of the villages in this region, they were much less easily reached by Aid.

Save the children have been working tirelessly to provide the Nepalese people of these villages with means of survival both during and after the earthquake. They are now working alongside them towards longer term goals, for example rebuilding the village school which is currently a temporary structure.

Amanda spent most of her time in Nepal with two families which were filmed for the Text Santa christmas show. Text Santa raised a staggering 8.5 million pounds that night, and some of this money will go towards the villages Amanda visited.

Amanda became close with Guyatri, a young girl who tragedly lost her mother and home in the earthquake. She was shy and nervous at the beginning of the week, however improved every day and by the end of the week she was really enjoying the filming.

Unfortunately, now Guyatri has grown up very fast as she now has to cook dinner for herself and her father while he is out at work. She's a sweet girl who is worried about the future, and being cold in the winter. The temperatures are plummeting and it will soon be freezing. Their temporary shelter provided by Save the Children offers little warmth and they do not have mattresses or duvets.

The money rasied by Text Santa will allow Save the Children to distrubute winter kits to these families, with scarves, hats, socks, warm pyjamas and rolls of insulation for their homes.

Amanda also met dad 'Lal' and his 3 sons who tragically lost their mother in the quake. Lal's youngest son was also trapped, but a neighbour managed to rescue him from the rubble and he miraculously survived. Lal now faces the future of bringing up 3 young boys, whilst trying to work, and rebuild their family home.

They huddle together as a family by night to keep warm, and the eldest son (aged 14) now looks after his younger siblings and cooks for them whilst Lal is at work.

This family's film was shown in its entirety on the Text Santa Christmas show and helped to raise the 8.5 million total fundraise.

Amanda found the Nepalese people to be the kindest, gentlest and bravest people she has ever met, and she hopes to return in 2016 to help further. Visit these links to see more of the amazing work that Text Santa and Save the Children do!
